We collaborate with the Graduate School and the Researcher Development & Graduate Centre (RDGC) in order to help in postgraduate students’ development. Our academic events are completely free for our members.
For new students their first contact with the society occurs during fresher’s week. BSPS organises a welcome event for the students, with general information about the faculty and the society, and the first official informal meeting between students and supervisors.
During the 2013/2014 academic year, we have organised several career workshops and high profile guest speakers. There is a Careers Notice Board on level 6 of B85 where students can go to see the latest posting of jobs available both in and out of academia.
We are keen to cater our events to the needs and appropriate career stage of our members, therefore students are encouraged to approach our BSPS Education Officer should they feel there is a certain training need that is not currently met.
BSPS also collaborates with the annual Centre for Biological Sciences (CfBS) Postgraduate Symposium, where students present their research to the faculty community. This event takes place in July, denoting the end of the academic year. Second year students deliver a poster presentation, including evaluation and award for the best one. Third year students deliver a talk also evaluated by the judge team. Everyone is invited to a post-symposium meal.
